Kentz Support Concern Trek in Nepal
Kentz Support Concern Trek in Nepal
The Kentz Group sponsored Martina Kavanagh from Limerick, Ireland who took part in a Concern fundraising trek in Nepal. Concern run a number of fundraising treks abroad each year in places as far afield as Nepal, Peru and India to name but a few. The funds raised through these events support the organisation's life-saving work with the very poorest of people in 29 of the world's poorest countries. Martina decided to focus on Nepal this year as it ranks 136th out of 177 countries on the human development index. Only 17% of Nepal's land area is cultivated, and that's in the Teri region. Many families face a lack of food for 5 months of the year. Malnutrition and disease are widespread, in fact child malnutrition has increased by over 2% in the last 2 years. Only 42% of the population have access to safe drinking water, often having to walk for miles to reach it. About 15,000 children die every year in Nepal from diarrhoea alone. In the past 10 years or so, AIDS has become a huge problem -- men who are working over the border in India are returning infected by AIDS. |

Day 4, when the group were walking to Deurali
| Martina chose to do voluntary work for Concern a number of years ago because she really believes in what they do. On 10th May, Martina, along with fourteen others, undertook a 12-day trek along Pike Peak in Nepal. This involved walking upwards of 25 kilometres a day, at heights of up to 4,500m -- with no lovely warm shower at the end or even a conventional toilet -- and the group slept in tents each night in freezing temperatures. They wholeheartedly embraced the challenge which was an amazing and humbling experience. |
| To take part in this challenge, Martina needed to raise a minimum of €5,000. After raising €1,065 by holding a coffee morning, Kentz offered to cover the remainder of the funding needed. Kentz was proud to support Martina in this noble endeavour and congratulates her on successfully completing the trek in Nepal. |
